Dear DIS Community,

I want to start this letter by once again thanking the entire DIS community for your work, support, and dedication to the students and their learning for the past few months. No one expected anything like COVID-19 to impact us and our students’ education the way it did. However, the DIS community responded with great determination to maintain our expectations for student safety and educational success. The teachers, staff, and administrators continue to work every day to do what is best for students’ well-being and learning. As parents, you have had to continually make sacrifices to ensure your children are safe, healthy, and engaged daily in online learning. Words cannot express my appreciation for our united DIS community!

The Korean Ministry of Education announced on May 4, 2020 that Korean schools will begin reopening on Wednesday, May 13. Schools will stagger the return of students based on grade levels until all students (K-12) are in school by June 1. DIS is in the unique position of ending our school year while Korean schools began in March. Given the differences between our school calendars, I have the flexibility to determine what is best for the overall well-being of the DIS students and faculty.

The choice to close school on February 20, before the major outbreak of COVID-19, was not a decision that I took lightly. However, the health of the DIS students and faculty is my primary concern and the education of our students is secondary. That being said, I collaborated with the Chairperson of the DIS Board of Directors, the DIS administrative team, the DIS Office Manager, the DIS Business Manager, and DIS Nurse Becky and decided that with just eleven days left of our school year (based on a May 13 start date), Daegu International School will remain closed and continue with online learning for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.

DIS has the advantage of continuing our strong online learning program and maintaining the safety of the students and faculty while observing the successes and drawbacks from the reopening of Korean schools. Some countries, such as Singapore, reopened schools last month only to see a spike in COVID-19 cases again. DIS began writing a reentry plan in March and has it ready to go; however, we do not have to take the risk of opening just for the sake of opening.

I am certain DIS will be better prepared in August to adhere to guidelines for classroom social distancing and meet all health standards through observation of the Korean schools in the upcoming weeks. I, as much as all the students, teachers, and parents, want to return to normalcy and be back on campus. But given that all Korean students will not be in school together until June 1, taking into consideration DIS has only eleven student days left in this school year, and to be extremely cautious regarding students’ and faculty members’ health, it is in the best interest to continue with our online learning for the remainder of this school year.

More information will be emailed soon if we are able to host socially-distanced, in person graduations or if we are able to organize a fun, safe end of year activity for everyone.

Thank you for your continued patience, support, and trust that I will always do what is best for our students, faculty, and school community.

Sincerely,

Chris Murphy

DIS Head of School

Chris Murphy
