Outdoor basketball backboards receive a summer overhaul

Building on the Jetnasium floor refurbishments, the facilities staff turned their attention to the weathered backboards on the front and back basketball courts ahead of the 2026-27 school year. The new design matches the logo at center court, creating a more cohesive look across the school’s sports facilities.

“The backboards were set up five years ago already. The wrapping film was really faded and cracked, so we decided to change them,” Facility and Teacher’s Housing Supervisor and Safety Manager Mr. Bae said.

The renovation introduced a deep navy color adding a touch of school spirit. The administration recognized the previous design, which featured a black background against the glider logo, visually distracting students from playing basketball games.

“The old one, I think it was plastic. So when we shot the ball or made a layup, it wasn’t consistent and it felt weird. And, because the old backboard had multiple elements and multiple colors, it was kind of distracting. But, since now, it’s just the DIS logo on it, I think it’s just simple and clean,” junior Jason Kim said.

The admin partnered with a car-signage company to resurface the backboards. Mr. Bae led the collaboration and worked with the company to determine the design’s font and sizing. Rather than replacing the existing structures, the team used car-wrapping film to refresh the color. Workers printed the new design and applied the film directly onto the panels.

In response to the change, students already feel satisfied about the upgraded designs. “I think it’s really great. Last year, our backboard was kind of bland and the paint was peeling a little bit. And on the first day of school, when I came to the court and saw the new backboards, I thought that DIS really cared about the student sport facilities,” eighth grader Miles Long said.

The refreshed backboards now complement the newly renovated Jetnasium floor and give the school’s athletic spaces a more unified appearance. As students begin their athletic season, the upgrade provides a renewed setting to practice, play and compete.
