Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) members attended the 76th anniversary of the Battle of Tabu-dong Ceremony in Tabu-dong to observe the efforts during the Korean War on Sept. 29. The ceremony included a museum tour, a memorial for the fallen, and a speech from student leader Aiden Huh.

“We were first invited to the event after our initial ceremony and invitation to the National Assembly,” Huh said. “It was a pretty big honor, because many important government officials like the Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs were there.”

The ceremony started with a tour of the museum about the historical event, as many expressed the importance of the event to the history and existence of South Korea. “The Battle of Tabu-dong was the most important battle of the Korean War that held communist troops behind the Nakdong River,” army veteran Gang Jin-ho said. “Without it, Korea’s democracy today would not exist.”

Through exploring the museum, JROTC members understood the significance of the Tabu-dong battle and Korean War. “I learned a lot about the history of the Korean War in the museum tour,” senior Maddox Jolly said. “It was interesting to see that this country and our school would not have existed without the efforts of these soldiers.”

After the museum tour, they attended a commemoration ceremony honoring fallen soldiers and veterans.

The observance involved a speech from Huh in the form of a letter written by a soldier. “I was requested to give a speech when they first reached out to us over summer break.” Huh said. “Instead of a generic speech about commemorating the battle, I decided to style mine to be more personal and emotional.”

The junior corps received positive feedback for their attendance of the ceremony. “I appreciate the attention young people have given to our struggle,” Gang said. “It’s important that students know our history and study hard to create a better future for our country.”

The JROTC will continue to participate in the formality. “The event happens every year in September,” Jang Yong-sun, leader of the Pohang ROTC said. “Starting from this year, the DIS JROTC will be invited to this annually.”

Huh anticipates more activities later in the school year. “This is the first of many events that the DIS JROTC has been invited to participate in,” Huh said. “We look forward to our JROTC camp in October.”
