Media

Students research and report on school-wide news and events, explore graphic design, and publish their work on the official news site: Jets Flyover. They write articles on topics such as past and future events, sports, arts, food, media, and any fun topics of their choice. They also take photographs, conduct interviews, and design games that are published on the site.

Journalism is an elective course where students write and design the school news website, the Jets Flyover. Students learn to write and edit news, feature, arts & entertainment, opinion, and sports articles for the newspaper and design the news website. They will learn the art of photography and how to create graphic designs.  They become journalists - conduct research, interview people, investigate current issues, cover events on and off campus, and write about news in their local community. Their work will be printed in the Jets Flyover news website and shared with all students and teachers at Advisory each week.

Students can take the Journalism elective course 2 years in a row. Editor and leadership opportunities are available by the end of year 1 and for the 2nd year of the course, such as editor-in-chief, managing editor, section editor, and multimedia director.

Yearbook is an elective course where students learn graphic design, photography, and they design the yearbook. Students learn camera skills such as shutter speed, aperture, shot composition, and the rule of thirds. They will learn to use many Adobe programs such as In Design, Photoshop, and Lightroom. To design the yearbook, students attend school-wide events to take photos and conduct interviews. They also communicate with teachers and student leaders. The entire school enjoys the labor of the yearbook staff at the end of every school year.

Students can take the Yearbook elective course 2 years in a row. Leadership opportunities are available by the end of year 1 and for the 2nd year of the Yearbook course, such as editor-in-chief and managing editor of the yearbook.

Jet Streamers produce news broadcasts. They become journalists, find and report news stories, and broadcast their work on the DISTV YouTube channel.

Video Production is an elective course that introduces students to broadcast journalism and filmmaking. Students will produce broadcast journalism news videos. They will be responsible for writing, filming interviews, and editing footage for the official DIS news broadcast, the Jet Stream. Students will also learn techniques that professional filmmakers use such as screenwriting, cinematography, and editing. They explore several genres, including short films, thrillers, TV commercials, documentaries, music videos, animations, and many more. They use professional technology, filming equipment, and editing software to produce their work. There are several opportunities for authentic assessment as students leave the classroom and venture around the campus and local community to film scenes, interviews, and other footage for this class. Their films and news videos are broadcast on our school YouTube channel, DISTV, to be enjoyed by the DIS community every Friday at Advisory.

Students can take the Video Production elective course 2 years in a row. Projects will be more advanced in the second year of the course. Students can take leadership roles such as producer and director in the second year of the course.

Students in Advanced Media - Independent Study hold leadership positions on any of the 3 DIS media platforms they choose - the yearbook, the Jets Flyover news website, and the Jet Stream video news broadcast. The prerequisites for Advanced Media are completing a prior media class (Video Production, Journalism, or Yearbook), and a recommendation from the media teacher. Students must simultaneously be enrolled in a second year of another media class along with this Advanced Media class during senior year. Students take the skills and experience gained in the previous 11th grade media classes and work independently to either write news articles, write scripts for broadcast, edit other student work, or complete graphic design for the yearbook.  The purpose of this course is to provide motivated students with the opportunity to expand on the knowledge and skills they acquired in past media classes.
