Daegu International School (DIS) is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), which ensures the quality of education and allows DIS credits and diplomas to be officially recognized in the United States. In addition, DIS is the first international school in Korea accredited by the Ministry of Education, meaning student records and diplomas are formally recognized within the Korean education system.

DIS is a branch campus of Lee Academy (LA), a private school located in Lee, Maine, USA. Founded in 1845, Lee Academy has a proud tradition and history of over 180 years of providing high-quality college preparatory education. DIS follows the same American private school curriculum as Lee Academy. Students who meet the graduation requirements at DIS earn dual diplomas from both Lee Academy and Daegu International School.

DIS currently enrolls approximately 360 students (as of September 2025) representing diverse backgrounds from 20 different countries.

The DIS school year generally begins in mid-August and ends in mid-June, with approximately 180 school days.

Major breaks include:

• Korean national holidays
• Chuseok and Lunar New Year holidays
• Winter break
• Spring break

All students, regardless of grade level, attend regular classes from Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 2:35 p.m.

Elementary, middle, and high school students may also participate in after-school activities from 2:45 p.m. to 4:20 p.m. (optional).

DIS teachers represent diverse nationalities, with a majority coming from the United States. They bring unique cultural perspectives and strong professional expertise, providing students with a well-rounded and enriching learning experience. All teachers are fully certified and have extensive subject-specific knowledge and teaching experience.

DIS provides on-campus dormitory facilities available for students in Grades 5 through 12. The dormitory is staffed and supervised by members of the faculty, ensuring a safe and supportive living and learning environment for all residents.

DIS operates school bus routes within Daegu. Routes are organized based on student demand. Information on bus service, including routes and fees, is available on the School Bus page under the Community menu.

Lunch is provided daily in the school cafeteria, with an additional fee required. Menus can be found on the Cafeteria page under Quick Links.

School uniforms are mandatory at DIS. A variety of options are available, and items can be purchased through our official provider, Lands’ End.

DIS offers a curriculum built on widely recognized U.S. standards, including the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and the C3 Framework for Social Studies, among others. These standards are commonly used in international schools around the world and ensure that our students are prepared for both global and local contexts. In high school, students may also choose from a range of College Board-authorized Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Throughout all grade levels, DIS supports students’ academic, social, and emotional growth, preparing them for success at universities in the United States, Korea, and worldwide.

Students in Grades 3-8 are required to take Chinese and Spanish as foreign languages. They alternate each semester, one semester of Spanish and one semester of Chinese. From Grade 9, students may choose their preferred language of either Spanish or Chinese.

DIS offers an EAL (English as an Additional Language) program. This program is designed for students who do not speak English as their first language and require additional support in language learning. Eligibility is determined through assessments and coursework conducted by the EAL department, and no additional fees are charged.

DIS offers Korean studies for students with Korean nationality. The program runs for a total of 34 weeks (136 hours) per year and includes the following subjects:

• Elementary School: Korean language and Social Studies
• Middle & High School: Korean language and Social Studies (Korean History)

*According to government guidelines, acknowledgement is granted only to students with Korean nationality. However, foreign students with a basic command of Korean may also take these classes for enrichment purposes.

After-school activities include a variety of programs and are offered by trimester throughout the school year. Available programs may vary each term depending on student interest and teacher availability. Students may register for up to one activity per day, and all after-school activities are free of charge.

DIS has a maximum capacity of 680 students (408 foreign nationals, 204 Korean nationals, and 68 additional Korean nationals in accordance with the agreement with the Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education).

Except for kindergarten, each grade level is organized into two classes, with about 30 students per grade level and 10-15 students per class.

There are no specific requirements; all students are eligible to apply. However, applicants are classified as either Korean or foreign depending on their nationality. Since Daegu International School (DIS) is designated as a foreign educational institution, unlike general foreign schools, requirements such as three years of overseas residence or nationality conditions for students and parents do not apply.

The admissions process proceeds step by step according to the admissions schedule. It consists of an application submission → admissions assessment → final result announcement. At each stage, documents, character evaluation, and English proficiency are comprehensively reviewed to select students who are best suited for the DIS' values.

The number of available opening is determined based on the number of student withdrawals and may vary annually depending on enrollment changes. The Admissions Office does not disclose the number of available openings.

For kindergarten and Grade 1 applicants, placement is based on the school’s age-grade eligiblity chart. For Grade 2 and above, placement is determined in connection with the applicant’s current school and completed grade level. Parents may not arbitrarily choose the grade level to apply for.

For the foreigner category, rolling admissions are available during the school year. For the Korean category, however, applications are only accepted once a year through the regular admissions cycle. No separate transfer or rolling admissions are conducted. In the case of mid-year openings, candidates from the applicant pool will be considered to fill the spots.

In accordance with the Daegu Metropolitan City Regulations on Additional Admission Quotas for Korean Students at Foreign Educational Institutions (Regulation No. 652, proclaimed January 1, 2014), up to 68 students may be admitted under this category.

Applicants residing overseas are eligible to apply. Admissions assessments may be taken online for overseas applicants only.

대구국제학교는 미국 서부지역 학교 및 국제학교의 인증 심사 기관인 미서부교육연합회(WASC: Western Association of Schools and Colleges)로부터 인가를 받은 학교입니다. WASC와 같은 기관의 인가는 공립 교육 체제 밖에서 운영되는 국제학교의 교육 수준을 보장하며, 본교에서 이수한 고등학교 학점과 졸업장은 미국 내에서 정식 학력으로 인정됩니다.

또한 본교는 대한민국 교육부의 인가를 받은 국내 제1호 국제학교로, 학생들이 이수한 학업 성적과 졸업장이 정규 학력으로 공식 인정됩니다.

대구국제학교는 미국 메인주 리 타운에 위치한 사립학교 리아카데미(Lee Academy, LA)의 분교입니다. 리아카데미는 1845년에 설립되어 180년이 넘는 전통과 역사를 자랑하며, 수준 높은 대학 진학 준비 교육을 제공하고 있습니다.

본교와 동일한 미국식 사립학교 교육 과정을 운영하고 있으며, 자격 요건을 충족하고 고등학교 과정을 이수한 학생은 리아카데미와 대구국제학교 두 학교의 졸업장을 동시에 취득할 수 있습니다.

대구국제학교에는 현재 약 360명(2025년 10월 기준)의 학생이 재학 중이며, 20개국에서 온 다양한 배경의 학생들로 구성되어 있습니다.

대구국제학교의 학사일정은 일반적으로 8월 중순에 시작하여 6월 중순에 종료되며, 총 수업일수는 연간 180일 내외입니다.

학년과 관계없이 모든 학생들은 월요일부터 금요일, 오전 8시부터 오후 2시 35분까지 정규 수업에 참여합니다.

또한 초·중·고등학생들은 오후 2시 45분부터 4시 20분까지 운영되는 방과후활동(선택 참여)에 참여할 수 있습니다.

대구국제학교의 교사진은 다양한 국가 출신으로 구성되어 있으며, 그중 다수는 미국 출신입니다. 교사들은 각자의 문화적 배경과 전문성을 바탕으로 학생들에게 폭넓고 풍부한 학습 경험을 제공합니다. 모든 교사진은 정교사 자격증을 보유하고 있으며, 담당 과목에서 깊은 전문성과 교육 경험을 갖추고 있습니다.

본교는 교내 기숙사 시설을 보유하고 있으며, 5학년부터 12학년 학생이 이용할 수 있습니다. 기숙사는 교사진으로 구성된 운영 인력이 상주하여 학생들에게 안전하고 포용적인 생활 및 학습 환경을 제공합니다.

대구시 내 지역을 대상으로 스쿨버스를 운영하고 있습니다. 노선은 학생들의 탑승 수요를 기반으로 편성되며, 노선과 비용 등 자세한 정보는 Community 메뉴의 School Bus 페이지에서 확인하실 수 있습니다.

교내 식당에서 점심 식사를 제공하며, 비용은 별도로 납부해야 합니다. 점심식사 메뉴는 Quick Links의 'Cafeteria'에서 확인 가능합니다.

교복 착용을 원칙으로 합니다. 다양한 선택 사항이 제공되며, 교복 품목은 공식 판매 업체인 Lands' End 에서 확인하실 수 있습니다.

대구국제학교는 U.S. standards에 기반한 미국 커리큘럼을 제공합니다. Common Core State Standards (CCSS), Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), C3 Framework for Social Studies 등이 포함되어 있으며, 이는 전 세계 국제학교에서 널리 활용되고 있습니다. 이러한 교육 과정을 통해 학생들은 글로벌 사회와 지역 사회 모두에서 성공할 수 있는 역량을 갖추게 됩니다.

고등학교 과정에서는 학생들이 College Board–authorized Advanced Placement (AP) courses를 선택하여 수강할 수 있습니다. 또한 모든 학년에 걸쳐 학업, 사회, 정서적 성장을 균형 있게 지원하여 미국, 한국을 비롯한 전 세계 대학 진학에 효과적으로 대비할 수 있도록 돕습니다.

3-8학년 학생들은 중국어와 스페인어를 제2외국어로 필수 이수하며, 한 학기는 스페인어, 다른 학기는 중국어를 교차로 수강합니다. 9학년부터는 학생의 선호에 따라 원하는 외국어 과목을 선택하여 수강할 수 있습니다.

EAL 프로그램을 운영하고 있습니다. 본 프로그램은 영어를 모국어로 사용하지 않는 학생 중 언어 학습에 추가적인 지원이 필요한 경우를 대상으로 제공합니다. 수강 대상 여부는 EAL 부서의 평가 및 수업 과정을 통해 결정되며, 별도의 추가 비용은 발생하지 않습니다.

한국 국적 학생을 대상으로 국내 학력 인정 수업을 운영하고 있습니다. 본 과정은 연간 총 34주(136시간) 동안 진행되며, 이수 과목은 다음과 같습니다.

• 초등학교: 국어, 사회
• 중·고등학교: 국어, 사회(또는 한국사)

※ 관련 지침에 따라 학력 인정은 한국 국적 학생에게만 적용되며, 외국 국적 학생의 경우, 한국어 기본 구사 능력을 갖춘 경우에 한해 교양 목적으로 해당 수업을 수강 할 수 있습니다.

방과후활동은 다양한 프로그램으로 구성되어 있으며, 학년도를 3분기로 나누어 운영합니다. 개설 프로그램은 매 분기 학생들의 수요와 교사진의 지도 가능 여부에 따라 변동될 수 있습니다. 학생들은 본인의 선호에 따라 하루에 최대 1개의 수업을 신청하여 참여할 수 있으며, 모든 방과후활동은 무료로 제공됩니다.

교육부 승인 따라 외국인은 전체 정원의 60% (408명), 내국인은 30% (204명), 그리고 대구시교육청과의 협약에 따른 10% (68명) 이내에서 선발이 가능합니다. 

유치원을 제외한 모든 학년은 2개 학급으로 편성되어 있으며, 학년당 약 30명 내외, 학급당 약 10~15명 내외로 운영됩니다.

별도의 자격 요건이 없으며, 모든 학생이 지원할 수 있습니다. 다만 전형은 지원자의 국적에 따라 내국인 또는 외국인으로 분류됩니다. 또한 대구국제학교는 외국교육기관으로 분류되므로, 외국인학교와 달리 해외 3년 거주 요건이나 학생·학부모의 국적 요건이 적용되지 않습니다.

입학 전형은 전형 일정에 따라 단계별로 진행됩니다. 입학 지원서 제출 → 입학 평가 → 최종 결과 발표의 순서로 이루어지며, 각 단계에서는 서류 심사, 인성 평가, 영어 능력 평가 등을 종합적으로 검토하여 본교의 교육 가치에 부합하는 학생을 선발합니다.

결원 수는 해당 학년도 퇴교생 인원을 기준으로 산정되며, 그 수는 학적 변동에 따라 매년 달라집니다. 다만, 입학처에서는 결원 수를 별도로 공개하지 않습니다.

지원 학년은 미취학 아동(유치원 및 1학년)의 경우 본교 생년월일 기준표를 따릅니다. 2학년 이상 지원자의 경우, 현재 재학 중인 학교와 이수 학년에 따라 연계하여 결정되며, 학부모가 임의로 지원 학년을 선택할 수는 없습니다.

외국인 전형은 학기 중 상시 모집이 가능합니다. 반면, 내국인 전형은 연 1회의 정시 전형을 통해서만 입학 지원이 가능하므로 별도의 편입학이나 수시 모집은 진행하지 않습니다. 학기 중 결원이 발생할 경우에는 입학 후보자 풀에서 충원을 진행합니다.

「대구광역시 외국교육기관 내국인 학생 추가 입학 비율에 관한 규칙」(대구광역시 교육규칙 제652호, 2014.01.01 공포)에 따라 총 68명까지 선발이 가능합니다.
